Whiplash & Cervical Spine Injury

Overview

Whiplash occurs when the head is suddenly jerked forward and backward, straining the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine. It is most commonly associated with rear-end motor vehicle accidents but can also result from sports collisions or falls. Without proper treatment, whiplash can evolve into chronic neck pain, headaches, and reduced range of motion.

Common Symptoms

•Neck pain and stiffness that worsens with movement

•Headaches originating at the base of the skull

•Shoulder, upper back, or arm pain

•Numbness or tingling in the hands or fingers

•Dizziness or blurred vision

•Difficulty concentrating or sleep disturbances

Common Causes

•Rear-end or side-impact vehicle collisions

•Sports-related impacts (football, hockey, contact sports)

•Slip, trip, or fall accidents

•Physical assault or trauma to the head and neck

•Amusement park rides with sudden jerking motion

Who May Benefit from Treatment

Patients who have experienced a sudden neck trauma — whether from a car accident, fall, or sports injury — and are dealing with persistent neck pain, stiffness, or neurological symptoms should seek a comprehensive evaluation. Early intervention leads to significantly better long-term outcomes.

Treatment Options at Echo PMR

•Cervical epidural steroid injections to reduce nerve inflammation and pain

•Medial branch blocks to diagnose and relieve facet joint pain in the neck

•Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for long-lasting relief of cervical facet joint pain

•Trigger point injections targeting muscle knots in the neck and upper back

•Nerve blocks for radicular pain radiating into the shoulders or arms

•Physical therapy and rehabilitation to restore range of motion and strengthen supporting musculature

Recovery Expectations

Many patients experience meaningful pain relief within weeks of beginning treatment, though full recovery may take several months depending on the severity of injury. A structured, multimodal approach — combining interventional procedures with physical therapy — typically yields the best outcomes. Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities without surgical intervention.

When to Seek Care

If you have experienced a whiplash-type injury and your pain, stiffness, or neurological symptoms have not improved within a few days — or are worsening — contact Echo PMR as soon as possible. Early evaluation can prevent the condition from becoming chronic.
