Post-Traumatic Headaches & Concussion
Overview
Post-traumatic headaches are one of the most common and persistent symptoms following a head injury, concussion, or whiplash event. They can emerge immediately after trauma or develop days to weeks later, and in some patients they evolve into a chronic daily headache syndrome. These headaches are frequently accompanied by cognitive difficulties, light sensitivity, and mood changes — collectively referred to as post-concussion syndrome.
Common Symptoms
•Persistent or recurring headaches following a head or neck injury
•Sensitivity to light and sound
•Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, or memory problems
•Dizziness, balance problems, or visual disturbances
•Neck stiffness or pain accompanying headaches
•Mood changes, irritability, or sleep difficulties
Common Causes
•Motor vehicle accident with head or neck trauma
•Sports-related concussions (football, soccer, martial arts)
•Workplace accidents involving falls or striking the head
•Slip and fall incidents with head impact
•Direct blows to the head during a physical altercation
•Blast injuries in military personnel
Who May Benefit from Treatment
Patients who continue to experience headaches or cognitive symptoms weeks or months after a head injury, accident, or concussion — particularly those who have not responded to standard care — are strong candidates for evaluation at Echo PMR. Both acute and chronic post-traumatic headache patients can benefit.
Treatment Options at Echo PMR
•Greater occipital nerve blocks for headaches originating at the base of the skull
•Cervical epidural steroid injections for headaches driven by cervical spine involvement
•Trigger point injections targeting suboccipital and cervical muscle tension
•Medial branch blocks for cervicogenic (neck-originating) headache diagnosis and relief
•Spinal cord stimulation for refractory, treatment-resistant chronic post-traumatic headache
•Medication management using evidence-based preventive and abortive therapies
Recovery Expectations
Many patients with post-traumatic headaches see meaningful improvement with targeted interventional treatment combined with medication management and lifestyle modifications. Response varies — some patients experience rapid relief after nerve blocks, while others require a series of treatments over several months. Echo PMR's structured approach addresses both the neurological and musculoskeletal contributors to post-traumatic headache.
When to Seek Care
If you are experiencing persistent or worsening headaches following any head or neck trauma — especially if accompanied by cognitive symptoms — do not dismiss them as "normal" recovery. Contact Echo PMR for an evaluation, particularly if over-the-counter medications are no longer providing adequate relief.
